Back to the world…

I took time off from my day job as an insurance broker in order to get us mostly settled in our new rental. Neither the Ogre or I do very well living out of boxes, so I chose to take 7 of my vacation days – 2 before moving day and 5 after.

It was a wise choice for me, I think. Our basement living room is workable, as are the kitchen, master bedroom and bath. I’ve managed to get a few little projects out of the way, and spend time determining what I want to do with each space.

All in all, it’s been a good week. It was easy to balance life, blog and house this week. After all, I was geared up for it, and I really didn’t have to BE anywhere else. Tomorrow changes that.

I’m back to the world tomorrow. My “life” time will dwindle to approximately 3-4 hours a day. Next week, that time will shrink further, as I’ll be teaching dance on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

I enjoy my day job. I’m fortunate enough to work with some pretty terrific people and be in touch with some wonderful clients. It’s a job I’ve been doing for almost five years (a bit of a record for me!) – and there’s such a wonderful sense of belonging that it’s almost like being with family.

That being said, this past week has really impressed upon me that it’s not really where my passion is. I’m a artisan – whether it be dance costuming, choreography or home decorating. I truly do live to make things. Which makes tonight rather bittersweet.

My day job is a current necessity… but I do sometimes begrudge the fact that it takes me away from my projects and plans.

There’s a balance somewhere between working, home, projects, teaching, planning… I know there is. Now it’s up to me to find it.
